UPTOWN — Godzilla Sushi quietly opened its doors on Clark Street this week, giving staff and the neighborhood a test run before its official grand opening on Oct. 19, manager Chanthima Lim said.

"Everyone has been very excited and appreciative that we opened. They're excited about the concept. It's great for the neighborhood because it's affordable, plus we bring a variety," Lim said from behind the counter Tuesday night.

Until the grand opening, the restaurant at 4617 N. Clark St. will only be open for dinner from 5-10 p.m. Sundays-Thursdays and from 5-11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. The restaurant's Jefferson Park location also opens for lunch, a concept the Uptown location will be adding after the grand opening, Lim said.

The BYOB restaurant holds just shy of 30 people, making for an intimate experience, because "Chicago people like the experience of dining. They like dining out," Lim said.

Piggybacking on that idea, the restaurant will be giving away a free plate of sushi off its list of $2.95 offerings to all dine-in customers during the grand opening. It will also be offering delivery.

The store is named after its popular roll that features shrimp tempura, avocado and cream cheese topped with seared spicy tuna, spicy mayo and unigi sauce. Their full menu includes desserts, starters, Nigiri Sushi, regular rolls, special rolls, signature rolls, sushi and sashimi combos and donburi.

For beginners looking to try out the menu, Lim recommends starting with the special rolls, which include dinosaur rolls, dynamite rolls, Miami rolls, mini Godzilla rolls, red dragon rolls, red millinium roll, spicy trio roll, tigger roll, umo umo roll and volcano rolls. Desserts include green tea ice cream, melon sticks and mochi.

Daily specials will also be offered, Lim said.
