CHICAGO — Two men have been charged with intent to sell heroin after 74 people overdosed in 72 hours.

Alfonzo Sylvester, 24, of the 400 block of North Lavergne, is charged with possession of heroin with intent to deliver and 16 traffic violations, including fleeing police. He was arrested 12:42 p.m. Saturday in the 300 block of East 47th Street.

Mario Wofford, 26, of the 1500 block of South St. Louis., is charged with possession with intent to deliver. He was arrested 11:25 a.m. Friday in the 3900 block of West Congress Parkway.

The recent uptick in overdoses has been blamed on fentanyl-laced heroin being sold on the West Side.

Lacing heroin with fentanyl, a synthetic painkiller, increases its potency, but the mixture has caused deaths across the country.
