PORTAGE PARK — The Silent Film Society of Chicago is set to return to Six Corners with a screening of the classic "Speed Spook" at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
But the society won't be returning to its long time home of the Portage Theater. Instead, the society will show what it describes as an "unusual, off-the-beaten-path silent melodrama" at the Filament Theatre, across the street at 4041 N. Milwaukee Ave.
The society was forced to find new venues to show its silver screen gems after the temporary closure of the Portage Theater in 2013, and did not return when the theater reopened in 2014.
The society, led by Dennis Wolkowicz, held screenings of movies from Hollywood's silent era in Des Plaines, Park Ridge and smaller theaters throughout Chicago.
Wolkowicz, who once ran the Portage Theater, will accompany the film under his nom de cinema Jay Warren on a theater organ with an original score.
The film stars Johnny Hines an auto racer who finds himself embroiled in the mystery that surrounds a car that speeds through town with no driver and disappears before anyone can catch it.
