EDGEWATER — Hundreds of neighbors across the Far North Side flocked to lakeside beaches and parks to witness a historic lunar triple-whammy.

On Sunday, the moon revealed itself as a "supermoon" — when its position made it appear about 14 percent larger and 33 percent brighter than usual, as well as showing off a lunar eclipse.

The last time Earth saw a supermoon and a lunar eclipse on the same night, astronomers say, was 1982. The next time will be 2033.

In addition, the moon was "blood" red, making for a perfect kickoff to fall.

The lakeshore will was the perfect vantage point, according to the Illinois Science Council, since the moon was in the "lower east and southeast sky."

Despite a heavily clouded start, Edgewater residents waited diligently at parks and beaches throughout the neighborhood, bringing blankets, cameras, snacks, pets and loved ones all out to share in the momentous event.

After a bout of limited visibility during the eclipse, the moon revealed itself as bright red across a mostly clear sky — glowing against a backdrop of glittering stars.

Onlookers applauded, high-fived, kissed and smiled brightly at the beaming sky.
