COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — Two parolees tried to rob an undercover police officer at gunpoint Tuesday night, prosecutors said.

The officer had arranged to buy $429 worth of marijuana and heroin from Deon Tilman, 19, according to Assistant State's Attorney Lorraine Scaduto, who spoke during a bond hearing Wednesday.

Tilman walked up to the officer's unmarked GMC Envoy about 7:20 p.m. Tuesday in the 8000 block of South Homan Avenue and opened the passenger door, court records show.

After talking for a moment, Tilman pulled a gun and announced a robbery, Scaduto said.

Quinton Wiggins, 20, had handed Tilman the gun moments earlier when the pair arrived in a black 2004 Infiniti sedan, according to police and prosecutors. Wiggins allegedly waited in the car with a 16-year-old passenger while Tilman approached the officer.

Tilman took the keys to the Envoy, Scaduto said, and the officer got out of the SUV.

He pulled a gun, told Tilman he was a police officer and ordered Tilman to stop, prosecutors said. Tilman ran off and the officer fired three shots, missing the man, court records show.

Tilman tossed his gun and got in the Infiniti, prosecutors said, and Wiggins drove away.

Police were given a description of Tilman and Wiggins and arrested the pair that evening. According to authorities, both men admitted to the robbery and were charged with attempted armed robbery, aggravated assault of a police officer and attempted armed vehicular hijacking.

Wiggins, of the 3600 block of West 82nd Place, is currently on parole for residential burglary. He was sentenced in 2014 to seven years in prison. Cook County Judge Peggy Chiampas on Wednesday ordered him held in lieu of $500,000 bail.

Tilman, of the 3500 block of West 79th Street, is currently on juvenile parole for possession of a stolen motor vehicle. He was ordered held without bail.

Police recovered a 9mm semiautomatic gun with one round in the chamber, Scaduto said. They also found three spent shell casings on the scene.
