GOOSE ISLAND — Big-name chefs including Chicago's own Rick Bayless will flex some culinary muscle for college students next month.

The third annual, two-day ModMex-ModMix conference will return Saturday, Sept. 12 at Kendall College, 900 N. Branch St. Bayless, known for his Frontera Grill and Topolobampo restaurants, will choose ingredients for meals guest chefs will prepare for the audience, and cook one himself. Guest mixologists will also try their hand, and Catherine De Orio of WTTW-Channel 11's "Check, Please!" will emcee. The audience will get to taste and drink everything.

Guest chefs will include Javier Plascencia of Tijuana, Mexico's Misión 19, chocolatier José Ramón Castillo of Mexico City-based Que Bo! and Beverly Kim and Johnny Clark of Parachute in Avondale.

Mixologists will include Eryn Reece of New York-based Death & Company and Mayahuel, Erick Rodríguez of Mexico City’s Alamamezcalera, and Jay Schroeder of Frontera Grill.

Topolobampo on Sunday will host a five-course meal prepared by the chefs and mixologists, along with Bayless' sommelier, Jill Gubesch.

Tickets to the show are $85 each, and Sunday's dinner will cost $195 each. All proceeds will go toward the Frontera Scholarship, which awards full tuition to Mexican-American CPS students attending Kendall College, and the Illinois Restaurant’s Educational Foundation, which gives scholarships to high schoolers looking to enter the hospitality industry.

The event is hosted by the Kendall College Trust and next month's Chicago Gourmet festival. Click here to buy tickets.
