Old Town Chefs Face Off in Second Annual Mac 'n' Cheese Competition

OLD TOWN — Vote for your favorite mac and cheese next week at Old Town Pour House.

The Old Town bar at 1419 N. Wells St. is hosting its second annual "Masters of Mac" cook off Sept. 9 from 5-8 p.m., where its executive chef Paul Katz will face off against three other neighborhood chefs to see who can make the yummiest mac and cheese.

Patrons can participate by ordering the four-dish tasting flight for $16 and filling out an anonymous voting card. For an additional $16, patrons can get four-ounce beer pairings chosen by the chefs from more than 90 beers at the restaurant and bar. 

The winner will be announced at 8 p.m. 

Here's what you can expect: 

Chef Paul Katz, Old Town Pour House, 1419 N. Wells St.: Baked truffle mac 'n' cheese with Nueske's applewood smoked bacon, parmesan bread crumbs, shaved black truffles. Paired with Belgian farmhouse ale, Saison Dupont.

Chef Jim Heflin, Fatpour Tap Works, 2005 W. Division St.: Spicy piggy back mac with charred jalapenos and tomatoes, carnitas, bacon, ancho-braised pork belly and smoky gouda-cheddar sauce with a cotija cheese and pork rind topping. Paired with amber ale, Anderson Valley Boont Amber.

Chef Tony Scruggs, Old Crow Smokehouse, 3506 N. Clark St.: Creamy house Worcestershire mac 'n' cheese with housemade Worcestershire cheese sauce and elbow macaroni noodles. Paired with a Ravenswood-produced beer, Dynamo Copper.

Chef Blake Saavedra, Old Town Social, 455 W. North Ave.: Smoke mac with smoked cavatapi pasta, two-year aged Hook's cheddar cheese and Ritz Cracker crumble. Paired with farmhouse ale, Apex Predator.
