EDGEBROOK — An Edgebrook youth won two silver medals at the 2015 Special Olympics World Games.

Chris Nichol, who graduated from Notre Dame College Prep High School in 2014, won the silver in the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke races, school officials said.

The 2015 Special Olympics World Games July 25-Aug. 2 featured athletes from around the world competing in 25 sports.

Nichol also competed in the 200-meter butterfly race and the 4-by-100 meter medley relay race.

Nichol was part of a team of 15 Illinois athletes and eight coaches on the 491-member Special Olympics USA delegation.

Notre Dame College Prep Principal Dan Tully said Nichol had made the school proud.

While a member of the school's Anne and Edward Burke Scholars Program for students with mild to moderate cognitive disabilities, Nichol was a member of the swim team.

"Chris Nichol was the heart and soul of our varsity team," said English teacher and assistant varsity swim coach Steve Jankowski. "His hard work in practice, his love for his teammates and coaches and his performances in the pool were truly an inspiration to everyone around him."

Nichol also competed for the swim team at the Leaning Tower YMCA.
