O'HARE — Thousands of runners will get a chance to run a route Sept. 27 that is usually reserved for planes getting ready to take off or land at O'Hare Airport.

Sponsored by United Airlines and the Chicago Department of Aviation, the fifth annual O'Hare 5K on the Runway will benefit the March of Dimes, which works to improve the health of babies.

Runners will race along the furthest south runway, known as 10R, scheduled to open to air traffic Oct. 15.

Organizers promise runners "thrilling sights and sounds of planes taking off and landing nearby."

The race will start at 8 a.m. at 10510 W. Zemke Road. Parking is free for runners.

The event includes a 5K run, walk and kids run. Strollers are welcome, organizers said.

The cost for the run is $40 for the race and $20 for the children's race.
