GARFIELD PARK — To celebrate the start of the school year, Ald. Jason Ervin (28th) will host a back to school party Saturday.
The Back 2 School Extravaganza starts with a parade at 11 a.m. Saturday at the corner of Laramie Avenue & Washington Boulevard in South Austin. The festival kicks off at noon Saturday at Marshall Metro High School Campus Park, 3330 W. Jackson Blvd. in Garfield Park.
Starting at 1 p.m., volunteers will be giving away food and school supplies to parents and students in need. At 2 p.m., Gospel singers Karen Clark-Sheard, a Grammy Award winner, and Vanessa Bell Armstrong, a Grammy Award nominee, will take the stage.
Students can also get a school physical and dental exam at the fest. Parents interested in the exams should bring insurance or medical benefit cards Saturday.
“This is a great way for the community to come together and have some fun before the school year begins,” Ervin said.
The events are free and open to the public.
