UPTOWN — After five months of redesigning a formerly barren space, Uptown's newest pharmacy is preparing to officially open its doors in September, said the pharmacy's owner Eduardo Alpizar.

Uptown Pharmacy, at 4535 N. Sheridan Rd., plans to specialize in serving customers with chronic and terminal illnesses like HIV/AIDS, hepatitis and cancer, Alpizar said. The pharmacy will offer over-the-counter medicines and medical equipment, and it will accept all insurance, including Medicaid.

Alpizar chose Uptown for his pharmacy because it has a higher rate of HIV diagnosis than other areas of Chicago, data has shown.

"I noticed they need more help for [terminal] diseases, so I'm opening a pharmacy that will specialize," Alpizar said. "Most pharmacies don't focus on that, so some pharmacists aren't knowledgeable."

To that end, Alpizar says he he hired two pharmacists with extensive knowledge in medications intended for HIV, cancer and hepatitis patients. The pharmacy will offer free delivery for its patients, he said.

Alpizar, 24, of Belmont Cragin, graduated from DePaul University in 2014 and says he has six years of experience working in a pharmacy.

Uptown Pharmacy will be open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m.- 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Stay updated on its progress on Facebook and Instagram.
