MAGNIFICENT MILE — Apple plans to move its Michigan Avenue store closer to the Chicago River, a change that could shift the shopping district's center of gravity further south, according to a report.

The Cupertino, Calif.-based maker of iPhones, iPads, and other ubiquitous products has "zeroed in" on Pioneer Court for its new store, a likely glass structure that would be built mostly underground, Crain's Chicago Business reported Wednesday. The store would be located on the riverfront plaza in front of a 35-story office building at 401 N. Michigan Ave., Crain's said.

The news arrives about a year after Apple hired real estate brokers to find a new location for a flagship store on Michigan Avenue. It opened its existing store at 679 N. Michigan Ave. in 2003, before Millennium Park emerged as a top tourist destination spurring development south of the river

An Apple spokesperson did not immediately return a message, and Ari Glass, a principal and chief investment officer of the firm that owns Pioneer Court, declined to comment through an assistant.
