Cemitas Puebla Returns to Humboldt For Taste of Latin America This Weekend

HUMBOLDT PARK — Although Humboldt Park's Cemitas Puebla closed its original neighborhood location, the neighborhood gem will be back for this weekend's Taste of Latin America.

The Taste of Latin America is celebrating its third year in existence this weekend with a schedule packed with live music and local restaurants.

The festival, which is supported by Ald. Roberto Maldonado (26th), kicks off Saturday at noon along Armitage Avenue between Central Park Avenue and Avers Street.

The weekend will include live cooking demonstrations, a chef competition and wine tastings. 

There will also be a kids carnival.

More than 20 Latin American restaurants are participating including:

Cemitas Puebla: Mexico (817 West Fulton Market): Formerly on North Avenue and now at its new location in River West, this restaurant is known for some of the best cemitas in Chicago. The restaurant will be selling chalupas and their signature milanesa plate (shredded pork with chipotle sauce).

La Bomba: Mexico (3221 W Armitage Ave): The casual neighborhood restaurant is popular with food lovers for its authentic Puerto Rican dishes. It will be selling tamales, roast pork and sausage with rice dishes.

La Palma Puerto Rican Restaurant, Puerto Rican (1340 N Homan Ave): This Humboldt Park eatery serves up some of the best "comidas criollas," an endearing term that local Puerto Ricans call their cuisine. Selling arroz con gandules (rice, pigeon peas and pork), and papas rellenas (fried stuffed potatoes).

Mekato's Colombian Bakery: Colombian (5423 N. Lincoln Ave): The will be offering empanadas and churros to pastries galore, their variety of authentic South American baked goods are second to none.

Sabor Latino: Puerto Rican/Dominican (3810 W North Ave): Blending Puerto Rican, Dominican and Latin American fare, this Humboldt Park eatery offers an extensive menu of authentic Latin and Caribbean dishes. They will be selling alcapurria and jibarito sandwiches.

Xocoatl Churros: No explanation is needed for this fried dough pastry that's wildly popular with dessert lovers on every continent.
