COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — After being beaten and having his clothes stolen at a Fourth of July party, a South Side man took revenge on two men who failed to defend him, prosecutors said.

Deonte Logan, 19, was "particularly angry" that brothers John Hunter, 25, and Willie Hunter, 31, didn't defend him during a fight at a South Side block party on the Fourth of July, Assistant State's Attorney Jamie Santini said during a bond hearing Friday.

The Hunter brothers were the nephews of state Sen. Mattie Hunter (D-Chicago), according to the Sun-Times.

According to Santini, John Hunter was part of the Black P Stone gang, while his older brother Willie Hunter was affiliated with the Mickey Cobra street gang. Logan was allegedly a member of the Black P Stone gang. The trio attended a block party hosted by members of the Mickey Cobra gang, Santini said.

The Hunter brothers, who lived in Missouri, were visiting Chicago for the holiday weekend, according to court testimony.

During the party, Logan got into a fight with several Mickey Cobras, prosecutors said. He was beaten and stripped of his clothing, according to several witnesses.

Logan quickly left the party, and the Hunter brothers and several witnesses followed suit, Santini said. Logan allegedly called one of the witnesses, irate that no one helped him during the fight. He was "mad and particularly angry" with the Hunter brothers, Santini said. Prosecutors didn't specify why Logan singled out the brothers.

John and Willie Hunter agreed to go back to the party area and look for Logan's clothes, according to prosecutors. They found one of Logan's shoes, but nothing else.

The Hunter brothers and a witness then met Logan in the 8800 block of South Bishop Street about 6 a.m. on July 5, prosecutors said. As John Hunter pulled onto the street, the witness got out of the car to give Logan his shoe, and Logan opened fire at the car — striking each of the Hunter brothers multiple times, prosecutors said.

John Hunter tried to drive away, but crashed the car in the 1600 block of West 89th Street, according to Santini.

Logan ran away with his shoe and gun, and a nearby home-surveillance camera captured the entire shooting, prosecutors said.

John Hunter was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 7 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. Willie Hunter was officially pronounced dead on the scene at 9:25 a.m.

According to the Sun-Times, at the funeral, their state senator aunt said, “As I have so often stated, our family is not exempt from the violence we face in Chicago. And guess what? The real truth of the matter is that no matter who you are, what you do and how peacefully you try to live in this world, violence is seemingly never far away and always ready to prey. None of us are exempt. We are all in this terrible tragedy together.”

Logan, of the 8600 block of South Laflin Street, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Cook County Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil on Friday ordered him held without bail.
