MOUNT GREENWOOD — Saint Xavier University’s Student Veteran Alliance was named the July Chapter of the Month by Student Veterans of America.

The Washington D.C.-based group credited the "highly active" student organization for its week-long lineup of events to commemorate Veterans Day.

Student Veterans of America also pointed to the Mount Greenwood university's Yellow Ribbon Program. This Post-9/11 GI Bill provides veterans help with funding tuition at private schools.

Saint Xavier students and faculty also collected toys for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program in the days ahead of Christmas.

The Student Veteran Resource Center at Saint Xavier opened on August 25, 2014. The center provides individualized advising and advocacy for the university's veterans. The space is also used to administer veterans assistance or VA benefits.

The Student Veteran Alliance works in conjunction with the resource center. The group advocates for student veterans and their families and promotes camaraderie through social support.

The alliance holds meetings twice a semester to discuss potential volunteer and event opportunities.

“They (veterans) are not here because it’s the next stop after high school,” said Sheri Gross, compliance advisor for veterans and athletes at SXU. “They’re here because they want to be here and further their education. Most of my students are really good at leading a group. They know what they want to do. They bring honor, they bring loyalty, they bring integrity. The university is richer for them.”
