5 Things To Do Outside Today: Dance to Soul, Watch 'Almost Famous'

CHICAGO — Here are some things to do outside today.

1. Soul Dance Before Catching "Despicable Me 2" In the Park: Part of the 48th Ward’s “Summer Nights” programming, this week’s events are sure to get you out and moving. First, get the blood flowing by checking out urban soul line dancing at the Margate Park Fieldhouse, then head over to Senn Park to cool down with a star-filled evening outdoors watching "Despicable Me 2." Soul dancing at Margate Park, 4129 N. Marine, $5, 6:30-7:30 p.m.; Movie in the park, Senn Park, 1501 W. Thorndale, 8-10 p.m., Free.

2. Help Keep A New Park Clean: The newly opened Margaret Donahue Park is applauded as a Cubs-sponsored gem for Lakeview, and supporters want to keep it that way. Each day, a couple of volunteers are asked to tidy things up and collect any trash. It should only take about a half hour, and a little love goes a long way. Margaret Donahue Park, 1230 W. School St., sign-ups available through September.

3. Prep for Lolla By Watching ‘Almost Famous’ in the Park: The next movie playing at Millennium Park is “Almost Famous,” the 2000 classic about a teenager who comes of age while covering a ‘70s rock band for Rolling Stone. Jay Pritzker Pavilion, 201 E. Randolph St., starts at 6:30 p.m.

4. Eat George’s Ice Cream Outside: Get an ice cream cone at George’s Ice Cream and Sweets, and then head to either the newly installed “people spot” down the street or one of the many benches lining Clark Street. George’s Ice Cream and Sweets, 5306 N. Clark St. Open until 11 p.m. Tuesdays.

5.  Give Young Writers an Audience, Rock Out to Folk Music:  Take the Blue Line home? Get off at Division and enjoy readings from students who participate in 826CHI’s after school writing workshops, then stick around for live tunes by the Cielito Lindo Family Folk band, a talented local family skilled in Mexican and English folk songs. The weekly event also features food from Cevapcici and Sweet Cakes Bakery. 826CHi readings are from 6 to 7 p.m., band goes on from 7 to to 8 p.m. in the Polish Triangle, the intersection of Ashland, Milwaukee, and Division. Free.
