HYDE PARK — Police are now calling a July 14 shooting in Hyde Park a case of mistaken identity.

At 7:52 p.m. July 14, a 19-year-old was shot in the shoulder while sitting in a car in the 5200 block of South Drexel Avenue.

At a Wednesday night meeting called by Ald. Leslie Hairston (5th) to address the shooting, police said they did not believe the victim was a gang member.

Lt. Cindy Sam of the Wentworth Police District said detectives believe the victim was followed to Hyde Park by the shooter, who believed the 19-year-old to be someone else.

Wentworth District Cmdr. Terence Williams was in Kenwood on Monday to address violence associated with the “46 Terror” gang, a group of about 70 that Williams said was the top target of police.

Sam said it was not yet clear whether the attacker was from a gang.

She said there were no arrests yet in association with the shooting.

Hairston encouraged Hyde Parkers to live up to their reputation to call the police if they see any suspicious activity and keep active on their blocks.

Hairston scheduled a follow-up meeting with neighbors for 6 p.m. Sept. 2 at Renaissance Place, 5200 S. Ellis Ave.
