Watch No BS! Brass Busk at Big Star During Afternoon Stop

By Alisa Hauser | July 21, 2015 4:23pm

WICKER PARK —  Those lucky enough to be on Big Star's patio on Tuesday afternoon —  or just passing by — were treated to several songs by No BS! Brass, an 11-piece band based in Richmond, Va.

Currently on a national tour, a spokeswoman for the band said the group plans to be in Chicago only for the day Tuesday and will head to Bethesda, Maryland, on Wednesday.

A Big Star doorman said the group had obtained prior permission to stop at the restaurant at 1531 N. Damen Ave. in Wicker Park.

The show was announced over Twitter. "OOOO!!!!!! SURPRISE! @nobsbrass will play a free show  @bigstarchicago TODAY at 1pm sharp #tacosandtubas," the band tweeted.

Among the listeners was David Novak, a sound engineer who works at a video game company above Penny's Noodles.

"I was listening to them from my desk, through the window and had to come out," said Novak, who also plays saxophone.

Novak, who bought two of the band's CDs — "Fight Song," a tribute to Charles Mingus and "RVA All day — said, "It's nice hearing brass; it's not a sound you normally hear."
