CHICAGO — Why adopt one kitten when you could adopt two?
That's what Paws Chicago is hoping Chicagoans will ask themselves during "kitten season," the warm months when many stray kittens roam the city.
The Lincoln Park animal shelter is challenging residents to adopt 350 kittens, a 10 percent increase from last year, before Aug. 31.
The challenge was launched Friday.
"The real reason why thousands of animals are needlessly killed every year is because of pet overpopulation," read a statement from Paws Chicago. "There are too many kittens and not enough homes."
The shelter encourages adopting kittens in pairs. Social interaction is good for development, cuts down on curious-kitty destruction and provides entertainment when human companions are out or asleep, according to Paws.
During the summer challenge at Paws, when owners take home two kittens, the adoption fee is cut in half for the second cat.
