CHICAGO — Police are warning local residents after a man exposed himself to a 12-year-old child in South Austin Wednesday morning.

The 12-year-old was walking to school on the 700 block of North Leclaire Avenue when the man asked him a question. Then the man exposed himself to the 12-year-old. The child notified an adult about the incident and police were contacted, according to a police statement Friday night.

Police described him as a 30- to 40-year-old dark-skinned black man of average weight and height, with a "chunky" face and short black hair.

He may have a deformed hand and walk with a limp, police said, and he was wearing a dark navy blue or black three-quarter length coat or sweater with a red design across the shoulders and blue jeans.

Police advise parents to escort children to and from all activities if possible and to instruct children to report anything suspicious to an adult immediately.

If you have any information about this incident, call police at 312-492-3810.
