AVONDALE — Police issued a community alert Tuesday warning Avondale residents to be on the lookout after a man tried to drag a girl into his van on Monday.

About 7:20 a.m. Monday, the girl was walking with a boy in the 3000 block of North Francisco Avenue when a man grabbed the girl and dragged her toward a parked white van, police said. When the boy grabbed the girl's legs and began yelling for help the man got into the van and drove off eastbound, police said.

Police describe the suspect as a clean-shaven Hispanic man in his 20s, 5-foot-9 to 6-foot-2, weighing 190-210 pounds and with curly dark hair. At the time of the incident he was wearing a black-and-white Adidas jacket and black construction boots.

Police said the man was driving a white work van with no side windows and a large dent on the front passenger side.

Anyone with information on the suspect or the attempted kidnapping is asked to call detectives at 312-744-8261.
