HYDE PARK — South Chicago will get a story of itself during a free screening of documentaries on July 26.

The Chicago Park District will host a free screening beginning at dusk of “South Chicago: In Progress” at Russell Square Park, 3045 E. 83rd St.

David Granskog captures the anxiety that’s permeated the neighborhood since the demolishment of the steel mills in the 1990s and development of plans for the new Lakeside neighborhood to rise in its place.

“Many residents are hopeful but skeptical of the big changes that are potentially in store for the area,” Granskog writes of filming the documentary. “This large-scale urban development that directly borders the neighborhood portends to bring long-term economic opportunity but also threatens to further exclude and gentrify local communities.”

The 40-minute documentary will be followed by films about Pilsen, the Gold Coast and other neighborhoods.

Harrison Martin’s two-part “Love and Capitalism” film comparing summer in Pilsen vs. the Gold Coast and class and love in Little Village, Lake View and Wicker Park will also be shown.

Rounding out the evening will be Ted Tue’s documentary "Come to Light" on the Chicago Public Art Group.

The screenings are free and open to public.
