HYDE PARK — The 4th on 53rd parade finished its 24th year with seemingly everyone in the neighborhood marching.

The annual parade on the 4th of July is open to anyone who wants to march and this year was as full as ever of community groups marching under homemade banners and kids on custom decorated bikes.

With the Grateful Dead in town, there were perhaps a few more tie-dyes than normal. But a few extra rainbow shirts looked dull in comparison to the huge diversity of people and groups in the parade.

Local politicians dressed in Colonial period garb marched with activist groups that on other days they may have clashed with. A float of Japanese drummers was followed by a group of African American cowboys.

The entire group went down East 55th Street to Hyde Park Boulevard and then march north before veering west onto 53rd Street and ending at Nichols Park.

A small flying drone hovered over the parade just before the park, with groups waving to its small camera.

In the park the King College Prep and Kenwood Academy marching bands continued to play, trading back and forth on songs on the lawn.
