ROGERS PARK — Just an hour before Rogers Park safety officials met with the community to discuss the state of crime in the neighborhood Tuesday night, a man brazenly shot at an SUV with several passengers, including a young girl, in broad daylight before fleeing the scene. The entire incident was caught on security footage.

Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police spokesman, said around 5:58 p.m. several calls came into police that shots had been fired near the intersection of Clark Street and Lunt Avenue in Rogers Park.

A man and woman, both 18, told responding officers they'd been shot at by someone they didn't know, but "refused to cooperate any further" and did not report being injured, Estrada said.

On the northeast corner of the intersection is a small strip mall containing a grocery store, several eateries, an insurance store and a place to cash checks. There are two entrances to the parking lot, one on Clark and one on Lunt.

Video surveillance obtained by DNAinfo Chicago shows a black SUV entering the parking lot around 5:48 p.m. from the Lunt Avenue entrance and parking near an auto insurance store.

A woman emerges from the car, goes into the insurance store and returns a minute later with a young girl. The two appear to get into the SUV. Shortly after that, the car backs out of the space, but re-parks.

Linze Rice discusses the shooting and police investigation:

A few minutes pass before at 5:54 p.m., a woman walks out of the insurance store and appears to get in the SUV, though the view is obscured from the video.

At 5:55 p.m. the car pulls out of its spot, heads to the Clark Street exit and turns on its right blinker.

At 5:56 p.m., from another camera, a man can be seen jogging toward the Clark Street exit, snaking his way around parked cars and apparently trying to keep a low profile. Within seconds, he arrives at the car and fires several shots before sprinting across the parking lot back to Lunt Avenue, where he had entered.

The car then pulls out of the lot, heading north on Clark.

Estrada said the victims did not mention a car involved in the shooting.

By 6:03 p.m., the first officer arrives, with another following at 6:05 p.m., who can be seen looking around the area near the Clark exit.

Witnesses from nearby businesses, including the check cashing store near the Lunt entrance, said they heard several shots fired and saw the man quickly running back across the parking lot. At a grocery store near the scene, three or four children were among shoppers present at the time of the shooting, as well as a recent high school graduate employee, the store's owner said.
