Chicago Dyke March Celebrates History in Humboldt Park

By Darryl Holliday | June 26, 2015 8:28am

HUMBOLDT PARK — Those looking to support Chicago Pride far away from the annual Lakeview crowds have an option in Humboldt Park this weekend as the Chicago Dyke March returns for a second year.

The march will be sponsored by the the Trans-Latina Coalition and the Puerto Rican Cultural Center in Humboldt Park when it kicks off at Roberto Clemente Academy, 1147 N. Western Ave., June 27 at 1:30 p.m. It will then proceed west down Paseo Boricua, Humboldt Park’s designated Puerto Rican cultural strip on Division St. at 2:30 p.m.

The march is “an anti-racist, anti-violent, volunteer-led, grassroots effort with a goal to bridge together communities across race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, age, size, gender identity, gender expression, sexuality, culture, immigrant status, spirituality, and ability,” according to an announcement.

“The Chicago Dyke March is about celebrating dyke, queer, bisexual and transgender resilience, and it feels very special to be able to work with the Trans Latina Coalition,” according to JJ Ueunten, a Chicago Dyke March Collective member. “It means a lot for us to be able to learn from an organization like Puerto Rican Cultural Center which has such a rich history of supporting and building community in the neighborhood.”

The march follows a tradition of history and community organization, according to an announcement for the march that notes the legacy of New York’s infamous Stonewall Uprising and “the familial battles that have carved the past and present of Humboldt Park.”

“On June 27th we want to celebrate the history that Division Street holds and respect those who have marched before us, who march with us, and who will march after us,” the release reads.
