CHICAGO — A 20-year-old man was shot and killed early Thursday in North Lawndale, officials said.

Around 12:03 a.m., the man was sitting in the back seat of a car in the 1400 block of South Lawndale Avenue when a man walked up and fired shots, said Officer Anna Pacheco, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

The man was shot in the head and taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, Pacheco said. Police first reported that the man was 21 years old.

Negeal Smith, 20, of the 3600 block of West Douglas Boulevard in North Lawndale, was pronounced dead at 12:35 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

According to police, the man was a documented gang member.
