CHICAGO — The National Weather Service has issued two severe thunderstorm watches as storms approach the city Monday.

According to Amy Seeley, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service, two thunderstorms are headed to the city with the first one set to begin around 11:30 a.m. Monday. The second storm is expected later this afternoon around 3 p.m.

The storm system, which hit Rockford around 10:45 a.m., has tapered off, but Chicago residents should still expect winds around 55 mph. Residents should stay up to date with weather alerts as the storms approach the city, Seeley said.

The watch, which warns of damaging winds exceeding 70 mph, golf ball-sized hail, heavy rain and "perhaps a tornado or two," was issued for 25 counties in Illinois, including Cook County.

Tuesday is expected to sunny with temperatures around 75 degrees. More thunderstorms are expected Wednesday and Thursday, according to their website.
