Man Charged in West Elsdon Double Homicide, Arson, Police Say

CHICAGO — A West Elsdon man is facing charges after invading a home and killing a mother and her son Thursday afternoon, police said.

Jose Guzman, 20, of the 3800 block of West 55th Place, was charged with two counts of first degree murder, two counts of home invasion, two counts of aggravated arson and one count of armed robbery, police said in a statement.

On Thursday at 2:40 p.m., Carlos Herrera, 22, and his mother Maria Herrera, 49, were found dead at their home in 3600 block of West 55th Place, officials said.

According to the autopsy report, Carlos Herrera died from multiple stab wounds and the Cook County Medical Examiner's office ruled his death a homicide.

Police said Guzman set the couch on fire before leaving the scene.

Guzman is scheduled to appear in bond court Sunday.
