The General 'Farm-to-Taqueria' Aims To Become Hangout For Logan Locals

By Darryl Holliday | May 27, 2015 9:32am

LOGAN SQUARE — The General’s southern soul and Mexican fusion restaurant will open in Logan Square in two weeks.

The restaurant and boutique grocery store will open at 2528 N. California Ave., the former home of Provenance Food and Wine, on June 9 (a week past its original opening day of June 2.)

It will be the only entirely “from scratch” farm-to-taqueria in Logan Square offering fresh fare at an affordable price,” according to an announcement for the new shop which boasts a menu of “in-house smoked meats, handmade corn tortillas, and an array of homemade salsas and sauces in a casual setting.”

The restaurant and grocer is led by executive chef and Logan Square resident Anthony Mugica, a 25-year veteran of the restaurant and bar industry; along with fellow Logan Square residents Bryan Kiernan and Eric Ganz.

The team spent the winter renovating the restaurant at 2528 N. California Ave., creating a design that incorporated restored lumber from newly-renovated homes in Logan Square and wood from an old barn in Bristol, Indiana, according to the announcement. Work also included a restoration of the building’s original tin ceiling, which was discovered under a drop ceiling during construction.

The General also boasts outdoor patio seating, a private room for parties and seasonal sidewalk seating. Mugica will also have a hand in the creation of “the perfect Bloody Mary Bar” on weekends.

Named after General John A. Logan—the Civil War hero who founded Memorial Day and for whom Logan Square is titled—The General aims to be a communal destination for neighborhood merriment, according to Ganz and Kiernan.

“We see The General being a place where you can stop in on your walk home from work, pick up milk or eggs, grab a taco, and enjoy a beverage all in one stop,” said Kiernan.

“So many people from the neighborhood stopped in during construction just to say ‘Hi’, so we’re looking forward to meeting them when we’re not covered in paint,” Ganz said.
