HYDE PARK — University of Chicago police are urging residents on Harper Avenue to be cautious on the street at night after a string of three robberies between Thursday and Tuesday.
All of the robberies took place on South Harper Avenue between 57th and 58th streets around the same time, and police said the crimes suggest a possible pattern.
At 10:05 p.m. on May 21, two men took a university student’s cell phone and then ran away south down Harper Avenue.
At 10:15 p.m. on Saturday, a university staff member was confronted by two men, who took the victim’s wallet, watch and car keys and then drove away in the victim’s car.
At 9:20 p.m. on Tuesday, two men took a university student’s iPhone and wallet and ran away south down Harper Avenue.
No one was hurt in any of the three confrontations. In each instance, the men implied they had a weapon, but none was ever seen.
Chicago police said the victim of the Saturday robbery described the men as black and between 17 and 20 years old, but could provide no further description.
University and city police are increasing patrols in the area because of the possible connection between the three robberies.
