CHICAGO — Police are warning parents in the Austin neighborhood about a frightening encounter between a young girl and a man attempting to lure her into his vehicle Wednesday morning, according to a police community alert.

Around 7 a.m. Wednesday, as the girl was walking to school along the 800 block of N. Lamon Ave., a man wearing a black plastic mask blocked her path with his SUV as she crossed the street, police said.

He got out of his vehicle and told the girl to get into his car, at which point she ran away, according to police.

However, the man followed her for about two blocks before she looked back to see him eventually turn and flee down an alleyway, police said.

The girl described the man as black with a gray afro, brown eyes and wearing black pants and a black shirt, according to police. She said his vehicle was an older, white SUV — similar to a Chevrolet Suburban — with paint peeling off its upper portion.

Authorities are encouraging children to walk in pairs and avoid talking to strangers.

Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at 312-744-8200.
