JEFFERSON PARK — St. Cornelius School turned plastic bottles and aluminum cans into gold, winning $25,000 from Pepsi Co.

The Jefferson Park school collected 647,000 plastic bottles and aluminum cans to win the nationwide Pepsi Co. Recycle Rally competition, officials said.

The school at 5252 N. Long Ave. will use part of its winnings to buy iPads for sixth-grade students, school officials said.

School officials accepted their winnings at St. Cornelius' annual Field Day Friday at LaBagh Woods.

In 2012, St. Cornelius won a similar competition, taking home $50,000. That money was used to update the school's technology and make green improvements to the campus.

St. Pascal in Portage Park won second place in the competition, winning $10,000, school officials said.

St. Cornelius, St. Pascal, Our Lady of Victory and St. Tarcissus are set to be consolidated by the Archdiocese of Chicago during the next year.

The consolidation is designed "build a sustainable system that ensures a transformative Catholic education in this region of Chicago," Archbishop Blase Cupich said.
