CHICAGO — A Chicago Police officer who was recorded sleeping while on duty on the South Side has been suspended, police said Friday.
The officer was recorded sleeping in his car parked in Englewood on 63rd Street and Campbell Avenue and quickly went viral. A Facebook user uploaded the video to his page Friday, and by Tuesday afternoon it had more than 700,000 views.
"The officer from the video has come forward and been disciplined with an unpaid five-day suspension. This incident is unacceptable and not in keeping with the high expectations placed on our officers by this department and the residents of Chicago," said the Chicago Police Department in a statement.
“The video, I think, is there for all to see and make a judgment. … You have to look at what the men and women in uniform throughout the city do all day," said Mayor Rahm Emanuel before the suspension was announced.
