COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A South Chicago man accused of shooting at police in Englewood was held without bail Wednesday.

"The act of firing a weapon is dangerous enough, but to fire at Chicago Police officers — there is no condition or set of conditions I can set to keep the public safe. No bail," Cook County Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. said during a bond hearing for 19-year-old Rasheen Crenshaw.

Prosecutors allege Crenshaw pointed a gun and fired shots at police about 9:15 p.m. Monday.

The officers had been patrolling the neighborhood when they heard gunshots and rushed to the 6100 block of South Laflin Street, where they spotted Crenshaw and his alleged accomplice Jeremy Watts, 23, running with objects in their hands, according to police reports.

When the officers tried to stop the men, they ran, and Crenshaw pointed a gun at the officers and fired twice, Assistant State's Attorney Erin Antonietti said in court Wednesday.

Crenshaw then threw a sweatshirt over a fence and raised his hands as if he were surrendering, Antonietti said. As police approached, Crenshaw lunged toward the officers and took off running, according to prosecutors.

He was eventually detained and charged with aggravated assault to a peace officer, aggravated discharge of a firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm by a gang member.

Crenshaw, of the 8400 block of South Escanaba Avenue, was held without bail.

Watts, who was accused of running from police and repeatedly punching the officer who tried to detain him, was held in lieu of $500,000 bail Tuesday.

No one was shot during the exchange of fire, police said.
