Mather's More than a Cafe

PORTAGE PARK — A number of classes and activities for seniors are scheduled for June at Mather's More Than a Cafe.

In addition to breakfast, lunch and carryout meals, Mather's offers adults older than 50 educational classes, fitness classes, health screenings, consumer seminars, workshops, and special events and day trips. The cafe is at 3235 N. Central Ave.

Events scheduled for June include:

• First Ladies and Presidents of Chicago: Patrick Steffes, of Forgotten Chicago, will discuss the Chicago roots of four first ladies of the United States at 1 p.m. June 8. Since 1974, the first lady was either born in Chicago or spent part of her childhood here. A slideshow presentation will detail the Chicago history of Betty Ford, Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama and Nancy Reagan and show photos of some of the lesser-known landmark locations in Chicago where they spent time. The talk will also detail the history of the presidents who lived in Chicago. A $5 donation is requested. Registration is required.

• Musical Moments in Comedy — the 1960s: Musical Enthusiast Bob Levi will share clips of some of the most popular musical routines of the most popular comics from the 1960s at 2:15 p.m. June 22. Routines from Carol Burnett, Dick Van Dyke and Allan Sherman, Victor Borge and Stan Freberg will be featured. A $5 donation is requested. Registration is required.

• Friday Night Concert: Top Shelf will play the songs made popular from Dean Martin through the Beatles at 7 p.m. June 26. Dinner will be available from the Culinary Delighters until 6:30 p.m. An $8 donation is requested. Registration is required.
