COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — An argument in a Walmart parking lot turned bloody this week when a Gage Park man shot the driver of another car, prosecutors said.

The victim's wife and 2-year-old son were in the car at the time, but neither was injured, according to Assistant State's Attorney Erin Antonietti, who spoke during a brief bond hearing Thursday.

Arturo Santoyo, 20, was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm and held on $1 million bail.

Prosecutors said the attack happened about 4:15 p.m. Monday outside a Back of the Yards Walmart, 1424 W. 47th St.

The victim, a 34-year-old Bridgeport man, was driving a car with his wife and son. Santoyo, meanwhile, was waiting in his car outside America's Best Glasses, 1400 W. 47th St., prosecutors said.

Santoyo drove toward the victim's car at some point and the pair "exchanged words," according to Antonietti. The exact details aren't clear.

Santoyo is accused of then pulling out a gun, reaching it past the passenger in the front seat of his car, and firing a single shot toward the victim, Antonietti said. The bullet entered the 34-year-old's arm and traveled through his body, lodging somewhere between his stomach and thigh, she added.

Santoyo, of the 5400 block of South Talman Avenue, was arrested Wednesday.

On Thursday, Cook County Judge Peggy Chiampas ordered him held in lieu of $1 million bail.
