GRAND CROSSING — Thousands of drivers on the South Side are digging into their pockets to pay fines issued by the city’s speed cameras.

The location that appears to catch the most drivers is at 1315 W. Garfield Blvd. in West Englewood, which racked up $1,142,420 in fines since May of 2014. At that location, 2,592 drivers were fined within the last year with $35 tickets. More than 10,000 received $100 fines.

Speed cameras in Chicago can issue $35 tickets for motorists going six to 10 miles over the speed limit (but are currently only ticketing those going 10 over), and $100 tickets for those going 11 or more miles per hour over the speed limit. First-time offenders get a warning.

In Grand Crossing near Harvard Elementary School, 7518 S. Vincennes Ave., 966 drivers have been fined in the past year with $35 tickets and 10,517 have gotten hit with $100 fines, according to data acquired by DNAinfo Chicago.

Ben Woodard and Tanveer Ali break down the speed camera data:

At another Grand Crossing location, 346 W. 76th St., the speed camera has caught 148 drivers for driving 10 miles over the speed limit and 432 others received $100 tickets. A third Grand Crossing camera, 341 W. 76th St., has fined 74 people with $35 tickets and 186 drivers with $100 tickets.

In Auburn Gresham, near Foster Park, 8345 S. Ashland Ave., 407 drivers were fined with $35 tickets and 1,503 received $100 tickets. At a second location, 8318 S. Ashland Ave., 338 drivers were hit with $35 tickets and a little more than a 1,000 had to pay $100 tickets. Another intersection, at 1507 W. 83rd St., the speed camera got 143 people for $35 fines and 516 for $100 fines.

Here are all the stories looking at speed camera data across Chicago's neighborhoods.
