EDGEWATER — The Chicago Housing Authority is relocating 58 senior residents from its 200-unit Judge Fisher Apartments in Edgewater to make way for a $12 million renovation.

CHA spokeswoman Wendy Parks said the renovation would include replacing an "outdated" heating and cooling system throughout the building and the installation of fire sprinklers in all units at 5821 N. Broadway.

The residents were relocated to other CHA housing on the North Side, including in Lincoln Park and Edgewater, she said.

Movers were hauling mattresses and other belongings out of the Judge Fisher Apartments Tuesday.

Construction is expected to begin in May and residents would be moved back in the fall.

"The improvements made to the Fisher Apartments will ensure the quality of the heating and cooling system for the next generations of seniors," she said. "We apologize for any inconvenience and thank the residents for their patience."

A similar project is underway at the Rogers Park CHA building at Sheridan Road and Devon Avenue, Parks said.
