SAUGANASH — Lock your car doors and don't leave anything on the seat, Chicago Police warned Sauganash residents Wednesday after a half-dozen cars were broken into over the weekend.

The spate of burglaries hit cars that were left unlocked, Ald. Margaret Laurino said in an email alert to 39th Ward residents.

Laurino urged residents to double check that their cars are always locked — and report any suspicious people near their homes.

The six thefts happened in the police beat from Bryn Mawr Avenue north to Devon Avenue and east from Cicero Avenue to the Chicago River, said Chicago Police Department spokesman Officer Janel Sedevic.

However, reports gathered by the Sauganash Park Community Association on Facebook said 20 to 30 cars were broken into late Saturday night and early Sunday morning.

The crime spree presented an opportunity to remind residents not to make it easy for burglars to steal their belongings, Sedevic said.

GPS devices should be stashed in the glove compartment, laptops hidden behind a seat, purses placed in trunks and cell phones put away in center console, according to a warning distributed to Sauganash residents by police.
