HYDE PARK — Hyde Parkers on Harper Avenue had to listen to a wheezing South Shore Line train through dinner Monday night after a breakdown snarled train traffic on the South Side.

The southbound South Shore Line train experienced mechanical problems around 6:30 p.m. just south of the 57th Street stop that delayed by an hour Metra trains that also use the tracks.

Residents on Harper Avenue, which backs up to the train tracks, reported watching from their kitchen windows as passengers were forced to walk down the tracks to the 57th Street platform.

A spokesman for the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District, which operates the line between downtown and South Bend, Ind., was not available to comment.

Michael Gillis, a spokesman for Metra, said the issue delayed some Metra trains, but was resolved by 8:30 p.m.

He said a Canadian National freight train also struck a bridge at 115th Street, further delaying South Shore Line trains, but Metra trains were unaffected by that snafu.
