Two St. Rita Priests Celebrate Their 50th Birthdays 14 Days Apart

ASHBURN — A pair of priests at St. Rita High School are going over the hill together.

The Rev. Tom McCarthy and the Rev. Bernie Scianna will both celebrate their 50th birthdays with an open house from 6:30-11 p.m. Saturday in the school's gym at 7740 S. Western Ave.

McCarthy and Scianna were classmates at St. Rita and later joined the Augustinian Order in 1983. Their birthdays are just 14 days apart.

McCarthy is chairman of the board and chaplain at the all-boys, Catholic high school on the Southwest Side. His birthday was Thursday.

Scianna is the prior Provincial of the Midwest Augustinians and Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel. His birthday was April 9.

The open house celebration will include food from Barraco's, Country House Restaurant, Fat Johnnie's Famous Red Hots and Palermo's of 63rd Street. All ages are welcome at this family-friendly event.

Desserts will be provided by the St. Rita High School Mother's Club, and bar service will be provided by the father's club. 115 Bourbon Street in Merrionette Park has donated decorations.

The St. Rita Jazz Band will perform from 8:45-10:15 p.m.
