What We're Reading: Chicago's Tech Scene Is Booming (And So Are Our Thighs)

CHICAGO — We saw snow this morning, so we're SUPER cranky over here today. Here's some stuff we're distracting ourselves with.

Chicago Is Beating California in Tech Growth: Reporter David Matthews is reading in Crain's Chicago Business that Chicago is the third-hottest city in the country for tech jobs, even outperforming Silicon Valley. The number of tech jobs in Chicago rose 25.8 percent between 2010 and 2013, the third-highest rate among the top tech markets in the United States, according to a study Crain's found. Chicago is currently home to 133,170 tech jobs —more than the city of San Francisco — and Chicago's growth outpaced the 20.8 percent increase reported in Silicon Valley, the nation's tech hub. Seattle (37.3 percent) and Houston (26.4 percent) topped the list.

Think You Know Everything About "Airplane!"?: Managing Editor Shamus Toomey is reading A.V. Club's "Surely you can't be serious: An oral history of Airplane!"  a super-long but hilarious behind-the-scenes look at the famed disaster spoof, which is marking its 35th anniversary. You may have seen it 2,000 times by now, but did you know how much Kareem Abdul-Jabbar got paid for his role? Or what he spent it on? Or how Leslie Nielsen kept the crew laughing? Writer Will Harris' story will not disappoint hardcore fans.

How To Eat Healthy: If you, like social media director Jen Sabella, happened to eat pizza, tacos and a doughnut yesterday, you might be thinking it's time to get that diet back on track. Fad diets are the worst, so Jen enjoyed this simple list of ways to not suck at health in the New York Times. It's common sense stuff, though "not eating too much" is always the struggle.
