CHICAGO — Three people were shot near the University of Chicago campus early Sunday.

Around 12:30 a.m., two men and a woman were sitting in a silver car parked in an alley in the 5400 block of South Ellis Avenue when a man walked up to the car and opened fire, said Officer Amina Greer, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

According to a security alert from the school, the victims are not affiliated with the university, but fled to a parking garage on the campus, where campus police responded.

A 35-year-old man was shot in his left leg and taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized. A 22-year-old woman also was taken to Stroger after being shot in her abdomen and chest. She was listed in serious condition, Greer said.

A 24-year-old man was shot in his left leg, chin and chest and taken to Northwestern Hospital in serious condition, Greer said.

The two men were gang members, police said.

The motive of the shooting is unknown, and no description of the shooter is available, campus police said.
