ROGERS PARK — Police say a traffic stop on Western Avenue resulted in the discovery of a secret compartment in a car that contained a sock full of marijuana and a handgun.

An officer noticed an off-color fabric to the right of the steering column and while inspecting it, pulled a plastic panel that covered up a cubbyhole, police said.

The driver, Bernard Meggie, 29, of the 7000 block of North Ridge Boulevard, was charged with felony possession of a handgun and a narcotics-related felony for the manufacture and delivery of cannabis, according to police.

Police made the stop in the 7300 block of North Western Avenue around 11:30 p.m. on April 4, authorities said.

Inside the hole, around 50 grams of marijuana worth an estimated $500 was found packaged in 27 plastic bags stuffed inside the sock, police said. A second sock pulled from behind the first held a .22 caliber handgun loaded with six rounds. Police said the handgun was not registered with the state.

After being read his Miranda rights, Meggie reportedly told police to “just call my lawyer” if they wanted any questions answered, according to the police report.

Officers arrested a second man for allegedly purchasing marijuana from Meggie in the parking lot at Marathon Gas Staton, 7130 N. Western Ave. Officers found 12 grams of marijuana they said was worth $120.
