GARFIELD RIDGE — Church bells will chime across the city this afternoon to mark the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War.

Aldermen Edward Burke (14th) and Michael Zalewski (23rd) were expected to lead the "official" ceremony at 2:15 p.m. at St. Jane de Chantal Church, 5259 S. McVicker Ave.

The Archdiocese of Chicago has encouraged all Catholic churches to join in.

Bells are expected to chime for four minutes, to commemorate the four years of the war leading up to Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's surrender to U.S. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at 2:15 p.m. on April 9, 1865, at Appomattox Court House in Virginia.
