LOGAN SQUARE — The Logan Square Chamber of Arts is weighing in on the Northwest Side gentrification debate with an art exhibit opening Tuesday night.

The Re<new>all exhibit is about “unity and connection in the face of gentrification," according to an announcement. The show's soft launch kicks off at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Hairpin Art Center, 2810 N. Milwaukee Ave. as polling places close for the night at the same Avondale location. A full opening is set for Friday night, April 10, at 6 p.m.

“Gentrification has both positive and negative impact on a community and there are many perspectives and views,” according to Gretchen Henninger, Hairpin Art Center president. “We welcome these artists to the Hairpin for an informative and insightful exhibition and dialogue.”

The show features several Logan Square-area artists including Amie Sell, Aga Furtak, Attitude 7, Fernando Espinosa Herrera and Peaceflowartistry for a multimedia exhibit exploring issues related to gentrification in Logan Square.

The artists will showcase site-specific installations of sculpture, video, photography and painting. The pieces are a continuation last summer’s “<Dis>place <Re>create” exhibit, which launched Attitude 7’s “GentrifiedCampaign" and a the re-installation of Amie Sell’s “Home Sweet Home” exhibit — a set of work critical of Logan Square developer Mark Fishman that was forcibly removed from the former Milwaukee Avenue Arts Festival (now the Logan Square Arts Festival) by the landlord in June.

“It is important that we find the space to focus on relationships, memories and interactions between people, the spark that creates true community value and life in the spaces between,” Sell said. “Our collaboration will focus on connection, networks and unity, extending the ideas of home into the neighborhood.”

The themed collaboration will include a 32-foot-long woven site-specific installation by Amie Sell, #GentrifiedCampaign mural by Attitude 7, surreal photography projections by Aga Furtak, figurative puppet sculptures and video installation by Fernando Espinosa Herrera, and live painting and art-making by Peaceflowartistry.
