A New Chicago Skyscraper? Developers To Present Plans To Public

LAKESHORE EAST — The developer of what would be the third-tallest skyscraper in Chicago is about to make its pitch to the public.

Chicago-based Magellan Development Group will present plans for the proposed Wanda Tower at Lakeshore East at a community meeting beginning at 6 p.m. Monday, April 13 at the Radisson Blu Hotel, 221 N. Columbus Drive. The meeting, organized by Ald. Brendan Reilly (42nd), will be held at the hotel's Atlantic Ballroom C, Radisson staff confirmed Monday.

If approved, the 88-story, Jeanne Gang-designed hotel-and-condominium tower at 381-383 E. Wacker Drive would trail only Willis Tower and the Trump International Hotel & Tower as the tallest building in Chicago. Backed by Chinese conglomerate Wanda Group, Magellan's plan called for 390 condo units, a 250-room hotel, and retail space when introduced last year.

A Beijing-based conglomerate, Wanda is pouring $900 million into the project, representing what city officials believe is the largest real estate investment in Chicago by a Chinese company. Magellan, the master developer of the Downtown neighborhood known as Lakeshore East, controls the vacant Wacker Drive development site.

Reilly declined to comment through a staffer, and representatives of Magellan and Chicago-based Studio Gang Architects did not return messages.
