5 Things to Do in Wicker Park This Weekend

By Alisa Hauser | March 27, 2015 6:29pm

WICKER PARK —  There are plenty of reasons to hit the streets this weekend.

The Silver Room's Closing Party:

"It's Not Goodbye; it's See You in Hyde Park," says TSR's founder Eric Williams, who is packing up his  lifestyle, jewelry and accessories shop at 1442 N. Milwaukee Ave. and relocating to Hyde Park. (You can still find Williams a few days each week at Needs, a new men's clothing store opening at 1410 N. Milwaukee Ave. later this spring). RSVP on Facebook for the three-day-long party.

Scour Warehouse Deals from 12 Boutiques:  The Wicker Collective's two-day multi-boutique sale runs from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at MaZi Dance Studio, 2001 W. North Ave., 2nd Floor.

Broken Cherry and K-Mart Closing Sales: A rockabilly boutique with items like aprons and skull and crossbones socks for infants and a K-Mart could not be more different, but both have one thing in common: closing sales. Sale hours at Broken Cherry are noon to 7 p.m. Saturday; noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. K-Mart, 1360 N. Ashland Ave.

Celebrate Famed Writer Nelson Algren's Birthday: The 26th annual Nelson Algren Birthday bash honors the writer who depicted mid-20th-century urban America with a cool eye and a compassionate heart, as seen in such masterpieces as "The Man with the Golden Arm," "Neon Wilderness, Never Come Morning" and his prose poem, "Chicago: City on the Make."

Tickets are $10 at the door; $5 for students and seniors with ID. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Bloomingdale Arts Building, 2418 W. Bloomingdale Ave. Call 773-235-4267 or visit the Nelson Algren Committee's website for more info.

Peruse Art Made with Human Hair: There's just a few day left to catch Rosemary Meza-DezPlas' art show, which weaves her own human hair into paintings.

“I like the dichotomy of using hair because there’s the idea that hair can be sexy and engaging to people and then on the other hand it can be repulsive, like a hair in your soup or a hair on your hotel pillow,” Meza-DesPlas told the Huffington Post.

Dez-Plas' show closes Saturday at the ARC Gallery, 2156 N. Damen Ave. Hours are noon to 6 p.m.
