DUNNING — A 65-year-old man was critically wounded early Thursday after bullets came flying through the wall of his home in Dunning, police said.

At 2:50 a.m., the man was in his house in the 8300 block of West Forest Preserve Avenue when someone walked up to a window and fired several shots, said Officer Michael Sullivan, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.

The man was shot in his face and taken to Northwestern Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, Sullivan said.

No one is in custody, and police are investigating.

Ald. Nicholas Sposato (36th) said the man does not appear to be the intended target.

For last six months to about a year, neighbors have expressed concern about 10 or 12 men who have visited the man's son, "wreaking havoc and throwing parties at the home, usually at night," Sposato said.

"The son is hanging around some not-so-good guys," Sposato added.

Sposato said his office has been working closely with police to keep the gang-bangers away.

Sposato said such shootings are a rarity.

"This is one of the safest communities in the city. It doesn't happen often," he said.

A neighbor who would not give his name said he looked out his window early Thursday after he heard six gunshots.

"I thought it was someone shooting at deer nearby," he said

But then he saw police and firefighters come by about two minutes after hearing the shots.

Another neighbor, who has been living in the neighborhood for about 40 years and would only identify herself as "Ms. Green," said she was surprised when she heard about the shooting.

"I thought they had the wrong address," Green said. "It's a quiet neighborhood."
