NORWOOD PARK — Onahan Elementary School's award-winning Rocket Club will use a $2,500 donation to continue blasting away the competition, school officials said.

Ald. Mary O'Connor (41st) Thursday honored the team, which swept the 2014 Rockets for Schools competition in the class I junior division and presented coach Angelo Restivo with a $2,500 donation from AT&T.

"You went to another city, kicked some serious butt, and left them scratching their heads," O'Connor said. "You make us so proud."

Teams from Onahan finished first, second and third, results show.

O'Connor said the donation would be used to pay for materials and expenses for the afterschool club. Teachers and students at Onahan elementary, 6634 W. Raven St., had been covering the cost of the club's activities, she said.

"When bright young boys and girls like the ones here today excel in the sciences, then we as a society are all better off," O'Connor said.

O'Connor will face Chicago firefighter Anthony Napolitano in a runoff on April 7 in her bid for re-election.
